Country overview
The advisory position first: the UK Foreign Office and most Western equivalents advise against all travel to Mali. Armed groups operate across much of the country, kidnapping of foreigners is a documented risk, and there have been repeated coups since 2020. This page is reference material.
Mali holds some of the greatest heritage in West Africa. Timbuktu was a centre of Islamic scholarship with libraries holding hundreds of thousands of manuscripts, many of which were smuggled to safety when the city was occupied in 2012. Djenne has the Great Mosque, the largest mud-brick building in the world, replastered every year by the whole town.
The Dogon Country escarpment at Bandiagara has cliff villages, granaries and mask traditions that made it one of the most visited places in West Africa before the security situation closed it. Malian music, from Ali Farka Toure to Tinariwen and Salif Keita, has had an outsized global influence, and the Niger river remains the artery of the country.
Annual events and festivals
- Crepissage de la Grande Mosquee, Djenne (Apr-May) — the entire town replasters the mud mosque in a single day. Extraordinary.
- Festival au Desert (historically Jan) — a Tuareg music festival near Timbuktu, suspended since 2012.
- Sigui and Dama, Dogon Country (varies) — mask ceremonies, the Sigui held only every sixty years.
- Independence Day (22 Sep) — marks 1960 independence from France.
- Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (varies) — the main holidays in a Muslim-majority country.
- Diafarabe cattle crossing (Dec) — Fulani herders drive cattle across the Niger in a celebrated annual event.
- Festival sur le Niger, Segou (Feb) — a music and arts festival on the riverbank.
- Mawlid (varies) — the Prophet birthday, marked with recitations.
- Bamako Encounters (varies) — a major African photography biennale.
- Harvest and fishing festivals (varies) — including the Sanke Mon collective fishing rite. UNESCO listed.
